Mark Ross, better known as rapper Brother Marquis and a prolific member of the iconic Miami Hip-Hop group 2 Live Crew, passed away at 58.
The rapper died on Monday (May 3). The band’s manager, DJ Debo, confirmed his death to TMZ. It has been reported that his death appeared to be natural with no foul play suspected.
2 Live Crew’s Instagram account shared the news on Monday. “Mark Ross AKA Brother Marquis of the 2 Live crew has passed away,” read the caption.

Fellow band member Uncle Luke paid tribute to Brother Marquis on social media, writing on X: “My Condolence goes out to the Family of Brother Marquis and so many of his Fans from around the World after learning his passing.”
Adding, “We took on so many fights for the culture (and) made Great music together something I would never forget. We had recently got back together to take on another fight to get back our catalog that was stolen from us. We will continue that fight in his name for his Family.”
Ross was born on April 4, 1966 in Rochester, N.Y. He did not join the group until 1986 at merely 19 years old. He became part of the 2 Live Crew’s most prominent lineup which included David P. Hobbs, aka Mr. Mixx, Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell, and Christopher Wong Won, aka Fresh Kid Ice.
2 Live Crew gained notoriety in the late ’80s thanks to their distinct Miami bass sound that incorporated samples and explicit lyrics. The group is currently in a legal battle with Lil Joe Records over ownership of their work.
