Fat Joe is coming clean about his lyrics.
The South Bronx rapper says he lied in most of his lyrics about life in the streets while speaking with Gayle King and Charles Barkley on the premiere of CNN’s “King Charles.”
Young Thug is currently on trial facing RICO charges, and his violent lyrics are being used as evidence against him but according to Fat Joe, rappers aren’t always truthful in their music.
“I’ve been rapping professionally for 30 years — I’ve lied in almost 95 percent of my songs. I’m being honest. I write like I feel that day. I’m just being creative. You couldn’t build a jail high enough for the lyrics I’ve said on songs which are all untrue,” Fat Joe said.
The Terror Squad head honcho further explained that the lyrics aren’t representative of who he is as a person.
“What I am is I’m a family man, someone who gives back to his community all the time. I opened businesses in my community so the music would never amount to the actual person Joseph Cartegena. What’s even more horrible is the District Attorneys. They know those lyrics ain’t real. They know that’s creativity, but if it helps their case, they’ll use it to put these guys in jail.”
The 53-year-old artist later took to Instagram to clarify the intent behind his statements, clapping back at those questioning his authenticity in light of his admission to lying in his music.
“I had to say 95% of what I say is a lie so that they could understand that it’s unfair to try some kids for the rest of their life with sh*t they might have not done.”
“None of this sh*t is true. It’s creativity. It’s imagination. Those who know, know.” The self-proclaimed “elder statesmen” continued, adding, “If I say I use my creativity, my imagination in my music, don’t mean I ain’t lived a real f**king life in the streets.”
Young Thug has been in prison since May 2022, accused of racketeering and gang conspiracy. On November 9, an Atlanta judge ruled, in a controversial decision, that the 32-year-old rapper’s lyrics could be used as evidence in his trial.
