Mariah Carey has opened up about wishing she had dated Tupac Shakur after their brief encounter in the mid-1990s.

Reflecting on the experience during an interview on “Brown Bag Mornings” to promote her upcoming album, the singer revealed she met the iconic rapper at the 1996 American Music Awards.

During the interview, Carey recounted their interaction: “Well, he said it like ‘Hi, Mariah,’ and I was like [ahhh],” and she claimed the brief moment left her with “more than butterflies”.

Carey went on to explain how hosting duties kept her busy that night, but she made sure to revisit the moment in her mind: “I was hosting the AMAs that year so I had to keep going back and forth, but I wanted to keep going back and forth because that happened.”

She expressed her admiration for Tupac and his connection to hip-hop culture, calling their brief encounter a “major moment” in her life. When asked if they ever pursued anything further, Carey candidly responded, “I wish.”
