The late DJ Michael “5000” Watts, co-founder of Swishahouse and a pivotal figure in hip-hop, was celebrated in a grand memorial service on February 16 in Houston.

The event was attended by numerous fans and prominent artists, including Slim Thug, Mike Jones, Paul Wall, and Lil’ Keke, who came together to pay their respects.

The moving ceremony featured Watts’ casket being transported through the city in a horse-drawn carriage, followed by a stunning procession of hundreds of candy-painted cars. Crowds of supporters lined the streets to witness this heartfelt tribute to the influential producer and music executive.

Watts passed away on January 30 at Memorial Hermann Hospital in The Woodlands, Texas, at the age of 52. His family revealed that he succumbed to Torsades de Pointes, a fatal heart rhythm condition that caused sudden cardiac arrest.

In a heartfelt statement, his family expressed their grief and gratitude: “It is with profound sadness and heartbreak that we inform the public of our beloved Michael ‘5000’ Watts. We truly appreciate the love shown to Michael throughout his career and we ask for continued prayers as we navigate through this very hard journey.”

The legendary DJ is survived by his wife, five children, and two grandchildren.

Michael “5000” Watts played a key role in popularizing the chopped and screwed sound pioneered by DJ Screw. In 1997, he co-founded the Swishahouse record label with OG Ron C, which became a springboard for groundbreaking artists like Slim Thug, Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Archie Lee, and more. His impact on hip-hop culture remains profound, leaving an enduring legacy in the music world.
