The Skilla Baby shooting appears to have changed the Detroit rapper in ways he never expected.

After surviving a terrifying drive-by last year, he says the experience completely pulled him away from street life and forced him to rethink what he wants from his future.

Skilla Baby Says the Gangsta Is Gone

During an Instagram Live session, Skilla Baby made his feelings unmistakably clear. The rapper said the shooting “shot the gangsta out” of him and declared that he now considers himself a civilian.

His message was strikingly different from the hardened image often associated with street rap.

“I wanna be happy,” Skilla said, making it clear that he no longer wants anything to do with street activity or anyone trying to control his life.

The Skilla Baby shooting happened in May 2025 while he was driving along Eight Mile Road in Redford Township, Michigan. More than 20 shots were fired at his vehicle, and the rapper suffered multiple injuries before crashing into a nearby building.

Surviving the Attack Put Everything in Perspective

What makes Skilla’s latest comments particularly powerful is what happened immediately after the shooting.

Just two days later, he appeared at a 42 Dugg concert in Detroit and performed while wearing a sling and cast. Police later announced an arrest in connection with the shooting.

Now, more than a year later, Skilla seems less interested in proving how tough he is and more interested in simply being alive.

That shift could be one of the most important chapters of his career.

For an artist who survived a barrage of gunfire, choosing peace isn’t weakness. It’s survival.
