This past weekend, the life and legacy of D’Angelo were commemorated during a private funeral service held in Virginia.
The iconic singer, who passed away at the age of 51 from pancreatic cancer, was laid to rest on Saturday, November 1, at Saint Paul’s Baptist Church in Richmond, the city of his birth.
Images from the event’s program revealed that the funeral featured heartfelt tributes, including musical performances by Stevie Wonder, alongside D’Angelo’s former bands, The Soultronics and The Vanguard.
The Soultronics, known for joining D’Angelo on his celebrated Voodoo Tour in the early 2000s, included collaborators such as Questlove, James Poyser, and Pino Palladino. Meanwhile, The Vanguard played a significant role in creating his final studio album, Black Messiah, released in 2014.
The service was led by Bishop Ralland V. Robinson, with Pastor Jamal Bryant contributing via a special video tribute. In attendance were notable figures like Lauryn Hill, DJ Premier, John Mayer, and H.E.R., among others.
The program also expressed heartfelt thanks to several of D’Angelo’s close friends and collaborators, including Questlove and Q-Tip.
The family shared their gratitude in a message within the program, writing: “We wish to express our profound gratitude for the overwhelming outpouring of support. Through music, love, and light, Michael D’Angelo Archer’s spirit will shine forever.”
A public memorial in honor of D’Angelo is being planned for 2026, though no further details have been announced.
His untimely passing on October 14 deeply impacted the music world, prompting an outpouring of tributes from an array of prominent figures such as Beyoncé, Lauryn Hill, Barack Obama, Missy Elliott, Jamie Foxx, Tyler, The Creator, RZA, Yasiin Bey, and others.
