Diddy has criticized 50 Cent and Netflix’s recent docuseries, “Sean Combs: The Reckoning”, calling it a “shameful hit piece” that uses unauthorized “stolen footage.”

The four-part series, which delves into decades of allegations surrounding Diddy and his Bad Boy empire, premiered on Netflix on December 2.

Shortly before its release, a spokesperson for the music mogul — currently incarcerated — issued a statement challenging the documentary’s credibility.

The primary concern centers on the use of previously unseen footage that captures moments leading up to Diddy’s September 2024 arrest. Within this clip, Diddy is heard discussing legal strategies with his team during a phone call.

The statement claims that Netflix misused private and confidential material, including legal conversations, which were never intended for public viewing. Diddy’s team emphasized that these recordings had been part of an ongoing effort by Combs to document his life since the age of 19 for his own personal narrative. They argued that no rights to this material had been transferred to Netflix or any other entity.

“As Netflix and CEO Ted Sarandos know, Mr. Combs has been amassing footage since he was 19 to tell his own story, in his own way. It is fundamentally unfair, and illegal, for Netflix to misappropriate that work,” Diddy’s spokesperson said.

The spokesperson accused Netflix of attempting to exploit Diddy’s life for sensationalized media attention, disregarding both truth and legal boundaries. Additionally, they condemned the platform for appointing Diddy’s longtime rival, 50 Cent — who allegedly holds a “personal vendetta” against him — as an executive producer for the series.

The team expressed disappointment in Netflix for what they perceived as an unfair and unnecessary betrayal by involving someone who has publicly targeted Diddy over the years.

“Netflix is plainly desperate to sensationalize every minute of Mr. Combs’s life, without regard for truth, in order to capitalize on a never-ending media frenzy. If Netflix cared about truth or about Mr. Combs’s legal rights, it would not be ripping private footage out of context – including conversations with his lawyers that were never intended for public viewing. No rights in that material were ever transferred to Netflix or any third party.”

Netflix defended its documentary, with director Alexandria Stapleton confirming they legally obtained the contested footage and secured the necessary rights. Stapleton noted that Diddy’s obsession with documenting his life made such material available, adding that efforts were made to contact his legal team for commentary or an interview, although no response was received. Furthermore, she detailed steps taken to obscure the filmmaker’s identity.

50 Cent has not responded to the remarks or accusations thus far.
