The high-profile Tupac Shakur murder case has taken another unexpected turn following the death of Michael Sanft, Keffe D’s attorney, who represented Duane “Keffe D” Davis during his closely watched murder trial.

The Las Vegas defense lawyer was found dead on November 6, 2026, at age 55, just days after taking steps to challenge his client’s conviction.

Sanft’s death comes at a particularly sensitive moment in a case that has captivated hip-hop fans for decades. Davis was convicted of first-degree murder for his role in the 1996 killing of rap legend Tupac Shakur and sentenced to 40 years to life in prison.

According to reports, Sanft’s body was discovered at his Las Vegas home. Authorities have not released an official cause or manner of death. Police indicated that the circumstances did not appear suspicious.

Michael Sanft’s Death Raises Questions About Keffe D’s Appeal

Perhaps the most significant development is the timing. Sanft filed a notice of appeal on October 30, challenging the conviction that ended one of hip-hop’s most closely followed criminal cases.

His sudden passing raises immediate questions about who will take over Davis’ legal fight and how the appeal proceedings could be affected.

Sanft had represented Davis pro bono and remained convinced that his defense team had done everything possible during the trial. Following the guilty verdict, he expressed disappointment with the jury but maintained that he would not have changed his approach.

Davis, meanwhile, reportedly reminded his attorney that the verdict was only the first phase of the legal battle.

A Respected Lawyer Leaves Behind a Complicated Legacy

Beyond the Tupac case, Sanft built a reputation as an experienced Nevada trial attorney, reportedly taking more than 150 cases before juries. He also represented former Nevada politician Michele Fiore in her federal fraud trial.

His career placed him at the center of several high-profile legal battles, but his involvement in the Tupac murder case brought national attention.

Sanft leaves behind two children. His death marks a significant loss for Nevada’s legal community, while the future of one of hip-hop’s most consequential murder appeals remains uncertain.
