Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us”, a diss track released this past May amid his ongoing feud with Drake, has changed the game.

Since its release, the track, which was produced by DJ Mustard, has garnered debate on the true meaning of the song and whether or not it is a direct snub to Drake and his friends.

In a recent interview between Kendrick and SZA for Harper’s BAZAAR, the Grammy winner clarified what the phrase really means to him.

SZA asks Kendrick, “What does ‘Not Like Us’ mean to you?” to kick things off.

Kendrick responded, “‘Not Like Us’ is the energy of who I am, the type of man I represent. This man has morals. He has values. He believes in something. He stands on something. He’s not pandering.”

The Westcoast rapper further explained, “He’s a man who can recognize his mistakes and not be afraid to share [them] and can dig deep down into fear-based ideologies or experiences to be able to express them without feeling like he’s less of a man. If I’m thinking of ‘Not Like Us,’ I’m thinking of me and whoever identifies with that.”

During the interview, which included no mention of Drake, Lamar told SZA he doesn’t believe he’s “an angry person,” noting he believes in love and war and channels this belief in his music.

“Not Like Us” is one of multiple diss tracks aimed at Drake, including “Euphoria” and “Meet the Grahams.”
