Hailing from St Ives, Cornwall (UK), rising rapper Komander has carved a distinct path in Hip-Hop. Describing himself as unprecedented and precise, the up-n-coming British emcee is a trailblazer whose influence knows no bounds.
Komander, who is making waves in the underground UK Hip-Hop scene, began his musical journey by releasing music on Soundcloud and Bandcamp. His tracks explore themes of personal growth, resilience, and the challenges of life, resonating with a wide audience.
Yo Komander! Before we get into it, how are you feeling today? How is life treating you?
I’ve recently completed my first album “The Hand“ and currently working on my second album “Killa 4 Life“ so feeling pretty good.
How long have you been making music and who are some of the artists that inspired you to want to make music growing up?
I’ve been making music since my early teen years. I first saw N.W.A. live at Brixton Academy in London when I was 13. At that time, I organized Hip-Hop dance competitions at my school and a nightclub in the town centre called Washington Heights. From there, I started making DJ mixtapes. Some of my early inspirations were artists like Kool G Rap and Geto Boys.
How did you get your rap name Komander?
That’s an interesting story. I was originally known as Kommander, but one of the guys who was doing some of my early mastering, misspelt my name as Komander. I thought it looked good with one “M“, and the Rap name Komander was born.
What are you currently working on? Is there an album in the works we can look forward to?
I am currently working on my second album “Killa 4 Life“. Two tracks have been completed so far titled “Killa 4 Life“ and “Trapped On Silbury-B“.
How much of your real life comes out in your overall music?
Much of my real life come out in my music. For example, “Trapped On Silbury-B“ is about a dangerous prison wing I served time on.
For those who are not familiar with you yet, how would you describe your sound?
It’s something not seen or heard before. The track titled “Merovech“ from my first album could be described as apocalyptic.
Let’s now focus on your overall swagger. As far as style, delivery and appearance what do you bring to the table?
I’m representing my home of Cornwall, UK. Much of my style and appearance centres around the Cornish identity. For example, the lyrics in the track “The Hand“ go: “Cornwall and everywheres his home. You’ll never be alone.” In the track “Warlord“ I talk about country life in Cornwall: “Don’t forget about Jim of Fleet Street. Your in the land of the cows and the sheep.” In the music video for the track “Merovech“, I wear a black Cornwall cap with the National flag on.
Musically, who do you look up to? Who’s that one recording artist and/or mogul you look up to and say, “I want a solo career similar to his?”
That’s an easy question: 50 Cent.
What is your label situation looking like?
I’ve done pretty much everything on my own so far as an independent artist.
What is your opinion about the music industry? What would you chance if you could?
Even though I’ve been around Hip-Hop and R&B all my life, I know very little about the music industry itself. I’d chance working with a label and getting some professional guidance.
What are your personal and professional goals you have set for you and your music?
Goals would be to complete my second album, in a short space of time, and make a couple of music videos for the album.
Who are some of the artists you’re listening to right now?
Right now, I’m listening to the “Watch The Throne“ album with Jay-Z and Kanye West.
Finally, is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?
I’m something new with a style that has never been seen before.
Where can people find you online?
