Lil Durk has been moved out of solitary confinement after spending five months in isolation.
As of Thursday (January 15), it has been confirmed that the 33-year-old Chicago rapper, whose real name is Durk Banks, has rejoined the general population at the Los Angeles Metropolitan Detention Center. This shift comes after his placement in a special housing unit last August, following an alleged infraction.
Durk was reportedly separated after being found in possession of an Apple Watch, an item prohibited in his facility. However, in a motion filed on January 6, his legal team requested his release from restrictive housing.
They argued that the incident had not yet been reviewed by the Unit Discipline Committee to determine the appropriate disciplinary actions — a process typically expected to occur within five business days.
The motion described Durk’s conditions during solitary confinement, stating he was confined to an extremely small cell for 23 hours daily, equipped only with a single bed, a toilet, and a sink. He had no access to commissary, was limited to one phone call per month, and was restricted from any in-person social visits.
“[Lil Durk] is confined to a very small jail cell, just large enough for a single bed, a toilet, and a sink, for 23 hours a day,” the filing reads. “He does not have access to commissary. He is permitted one phone call a month, and no in-person social visits.”
The filing also raised concerns from Durk’s defense team regarding potential violations of his Eighth Amendment rights, which protect against “cruel and unusual punishment.” They emphasized the detrimental effects of prolonged solitary confinement on their client.
After a review hearing held on January 7, Durk was finally removed from solitary.
The rapper has been in custody since October 2024 after being arrested and charged with murder-for-hire in connection to the 2022 death of Saviay’a “Lul Pab” Robinson, a cousin of Quando Rondo. Initially scheduled to begin on January 20, Durk’s trial has now been postponed until April 21.
