Lizzo broke her silence on social media after a lawsuit was filed against her by three former dancers who have accused her of sexual and racial harassment and even fat-shaming.
βThe last few days have been gut-wrenchingly difficult and overwhelmingly disappointing,β the superstar singer wrote on Instagram. βMy work ethic, morals and respectfulness have been questioned. My character has been criticized. Usually I choose not to respond to false allegations but these are as unbelievable as they sound and too outrageous to not be addressed.β
The dancers claim that Lizzo pressured one of them to touch a nude stripper and even to eat a banana after it was inserted into a womanβs vagina.
βThese sensationalized stories are coming from former employees who have already publicly admitted that they were told their behavior on tour was inappropriate and unprofessional,β she wrote. βWith passion comes hard work and high standards. Sometimes I have to make hard decisions but itβs never my intention to make anyone feel uncomfortable or like they arenβt valued as an important part of the team.β
The legal complaint seeks unspecified damages and names Melissa Viviane Jefferson, known professionally as Lizzo, her production company Big Grrrl Big Touring, Inc., and Shirlene Quigley, captain of the performerβs dance team.
