Wiz Khalifa is grieving the loss of his father, Laurence W. Thomaz, who passed away at the age of 63.
The 38-year-old rapper took to social media on Friday, February 13, to honor his late dad with an emotional message.
“Today my father decided not to wake up,” Wiz wrote on X. “I will always love him, miss him and be [grateful] for the things he taught me. He went out like a true yogi, at peace and on his own time. I love you forever Laurence W. Thomaz.”
The “Black and Yellow” artist went on to express his gratitude for the love and respect his father received from others.
“My father’s passing was sudden but seeing how many people love and respected him makes happy and i know he’s proud that he left a positive impact on this earth. Literally all he ever wanted.”
Khalifa, born Cameron Jibril Thomaz, also shared heartfelt memories on Instagram. One throwback photo showed his father assisting him on a swing as a child, captioned: “Love you big guy.”
Another image included a young Wiz alongside his dad and likely his brother, Dorien “La La” Thomaz, who passed away in 2017. “My boy was smooth,” Wiz wrote about his dad in one photo. Another caption read, “You and La La are together again,” accompanied by a praying hands emoji.
Wiz had a close bond with his father, a former military service member. In a 2016 interview with NME, the rapper shared how his dad’s passion influenced him. Thomaz opened a recording studio in Pittsburgh — their hometown — when Wiz was a child.
“I lived in that studio. And that’s what turned me into who I am today.”
Khalifa wrote on X that his last conversation with his dad “was him telling me how proud of me he was for the movie i was in and I promised him i would do more.”
He also extended his gratitude to those who offered condolences during this difficult time, saying their support meant everything and helped ease his pain.
