YNW Melly’s trial for witness tampering is set to begin in just a few weeks.

Earlier this week, on January 5, the rapper from Florida attended a motion hearing at Broward County Court. During the proceedings, both prosecution and defense submitted motions to determine what evidence will be deemed admissible for the upcoming trial, as reported by NBC 6 South Florida.

Since 2019, Melly has been incarcerated while fighting a double-murder case. In 2023, he was also charged with witness tampering after his initial murder trial resulted in a mistrial.

The witness tampering trial is scheduled to commence on January 21, whereas the retrial for the double murder charge has faced numerous delays and has now been pushed to 2027.

The accusations against Melly involve the murder of two childhood friends, Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas and Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams, in October 2018.

Prosecutors allege that Melly staged the incident to appear as though the two victims were killed in a drive-by shooting. In October 2023, additional charges were filed against Melly related to witness tampering. Prosecutors claim he influenced his former girlfriend, Mariah Hamilton, and her mother, Felicia Holmes, discouraging them from providing testimony during the initial murder trial.

For these complex legal proceedings, Melly has enlisted new attorneys, Drew Findling and Carey Haughwout, who joined his defense team last September following his request for a change in representation. Melly alleged that his previous attorney, Raven Liberty, faced an investigation over supposed involvement in witness tampering.

Meanwhile, YNW Bortlen, Melly’s codefendant in both cases, decided last September to accept a plea deal. He was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment along with six years of supervised release.
