It’s a tough week for Tory Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, as he was transferred to North Kern State Prison in California and posed for a new mugshot, which quickly went viral.
However, Lanez’s court-ordered home for the next few months has raised safety concerns, as the institution has an ongoing violent history. According to TMZ, the medium-security prison serves as a reception center for new inmates and is located 145 miles north of Los Angeles.
The 31-year-old Canadian rapper will most likely be detained at the facility for a short time until he is transferred to a more permanent prison.
In February, 51-year-old Ramon Escobar reportedly strangled his cellmate, Juan Villanueva, to death and was later charged with first-degree murder.
In July, 25-year-old Ricardo Saldivar was found dead in his cell. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation are investigating his death as a homicide.
There has also been a string of violent incidents between inmates and correctional officers.
Lanez shot Megan Thee Stallion, a three-time Grammy winner, after a party at Kylie Jenner’s home on July 12, 2020.
A jury convicted Lanez, who pleaded not guilty to three felony charges in December, of assault with a semi-automatic firearm, carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
