Akon‘s plans to build a futuristic city in Senegal have been scrapped, according to reports.
The Senegalese government has officially abandoned the singer’s proposal to build a “real-life Wakanda.”
The plans for Akon’s city were unveiled 5 years ago and the first phase of construction was supposed to be completed by the end of 2023, but the project has been riddled with delays and controversy.
Back in 2020, the “Locked Up” artist secured a $6 billion contract to build a cryptocurrency-themed city along Senegal’s Atlantic Coast. But local residents were furious that the site remains undeveloped 5 years after the initial proposal.
Now, the government has reclaimed the land after Akon missed payments to Sapco, a state-owned entity that develops coastal and tourism areas. Bloomberg reports that Sapco will begin work on providing the site with new hotels, apartments, a marina and a promenade on their own.
Serigne Mamadou Mboup, head of Sapco-Senegal, confirmed that Akon’s project “no longer exists.”
When the news made its way to Reddit, fans were hardly surprised. “You’re telling me the $6B futuristic utopia run on Akon’s very own cryptocurrency, Akoin, isn’t coming to fruition!?!? I think I’m gonna need another source,” one user wrote. Another added, “This was easy money. We don’t have to just believe stuff is going to happen because a scam likely person says it.”
Akon’s former business partner, Devyne Stephens, accused him of planning to use the city he’s building in Senegal as a “Ponzi scheme.”
According to the findings of retired federal Special Agent Scot Thomasson, the potential framework of Akon’s city includes “many of the trademark characteristics (known as ‘red flags’) of fraudulent business ventures such as Ponzi schemes and pyramid schemes.”
Stephens’ lawyer, Jeffrey Movit, described Akon’s plans for the village as “broken promises,” noted that the singer has provided “almost no transparency about who is investing in Akon City or how it will be purportedly built. Therefore, Akon City is likely a scam.”
