Fugees member Pras has been ordered to pay a staggering $64 million to the U.S. government following his conviction on charges of illegal foreign lobbying and conspiracy.
Court documents indicate that federal Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly determined Pras had received “proceeds in the amount of at least $64,923,226” from offenses including failure to register as a foreign agent for China, conspiracy, and witness tampering.
Addressing the situation, Pras’ spokeswoman, Erica Dumas, commented that the government had already seized $100 million from him and was now demanding an additional $64 million.
This substantial financial penalty will not be the rapper’s only consequence. Pras is scheduled for sentencing on his convictions this December, with the potential of serving up to 10 years in prison. His legal team, however, has appealed for a reduced sentence of just three years.
Earlier in 2023, Pras was found guilty on multiple charges, including funneling money through a Malaysian financier via straw donors to support Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign, attempting to obstruct a Justice Department investigation, and lobbying on behalf of China’s interests during Donald Trump’s presidency to influence an extradition case.
In August, proceedings to finalize the restitution amount were delayed due to Pras undergoing emergency surgery for colon cancer. His lawyers disclosed in court filings that he was dealing with significant medical issues requiring urgent treatment.
Dumas later shared an update, stating that Pras had missed a court hearing because of the surgery but expressed hope for his recovery during this challenging period.
Reports earlier this year also suggested that former President Donald Trump was considering issuing a pardon for Pras.
