Method Man shared insight into why he passed on contributing a verse to the remix of Drake’s “Wu-Tang Forever.”

The Wu-Tang Clan rapper admitted feeling as puzzled as many fans were about the track’s connection to the legendary Hip-Hop collective it references.

Given the song’s title, one might expect it to pay homage to the gritty Staten Island group. However, the vibe of the Noah “40” Shebib-produced track from Drake’s “Nothing Was The Same” was far removed from Wu-Tang’s distinctive style.

Featuring breezy, atmospheric production and lyrics centered on Drake’s romantic escapades, the track didn’t align with a fitting tribute to Wu-Tang. While Drake’s hook includes the line “It’s yours,” as a nod to the Wu’s “It’s Yourz” off their “Wu-Tang Forever” album — also sampled in the song — that was the extent of its connection, leaving Method Man unimpressed when asked to contribute a verse.

During an appearance on the “7PM in Brooklyn” podcast hosted by Carmelo Anthony and Kazeem Famuyide on Monday, December 8, Method Man explained his stance.

“I like Drake. I think he’s a dope artist,” Method Man said in the clip that can be seen below.

“He puts out some great music, obviously, or else he wouldn’t be as big as he is. But, when he sent the record, we were overseas. He did send the record. Some brothers were trying to write to it and s**t. I’m sitting there and I’m like, ‘I don’t like it.’ I was like, ‘What does this have to do with Wu-Tang Forever? I’m not questioning his artistic ability or anything. I’m just saying, for my taste, that was more or less like, ‘I’m not getting on that.'”

By 2013, nearly two decades had passed since Wu-Tang Clan released their debut album, and lending their voices to a song by an emerging artist at the time wasn’t exactly a pressing matter for them.

Reflecting further, Method Man noted: “No one knew it was gonna be that big … You become jaded when you’ve been in the business for a long time.”

It’s said that other Wu-Tang members wrote verses intended for a remix of Drake’s track, but that version has never been released. Although shelved indefinitely, curiosity remains: both Wu-Tang and Drake followers might still appreciate hearing what could have been.
