Lil Jon’s final conversation with his son, Nathan Smith, has revealed a heartbreaking reminder of how much pain can remain hidden behind a family’s everyday struggles.

In an emotional excerpt from his upcoming memoir, “I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me”, the rapper recalls apologizing to his only son and making sure he knew he was loved shortly before his death at 27.

Nathan, who performed as DJ Young Slade, had reportedly endured years of intense physical pain and emotional difficulties. Despite their occasional disagreements, the father and son shared a bond rooted in concern, affection and a desire for Nathan to find peace.

Lil Jon’s Final Conversation With Nathan Smith

The most devastating part of Lil Jon’s account is how ordinary their last exchange seemed at the time.

Nathan had sent his father a heartfelt message expressing love and promising to communicate better instead of allowing fear to hold him back. Lil Jon responded with encouragement, telling his son how talented and intelligent he was and how deeply he cared about his future.

After discussing the exchange with his therapist, Lil Jon called Nathan again to apologize and acknowledge his efforts.

“I see that you’re trying, and I want you to know that you are seen,” he recalled telling his son.

Those words would become their final conversation. The next day, Lil Jon learned that Nathan was missing.

A Father’s Grief Becomes a Personal Mission

Nathan was found dead in a pond near his home in Milton, Georgia, in February 2026. Authorities determined that his death resulted from accidental drowning in the setting of psilocybin use.

For Lil Jon, the loss became a painful turning point. His memoir, scheduled for release on October 20, now includes a deeply personal account of losing his son and confronting the emotional aftermath.

The tragedy also highlights a difficult truth: even within loving families, people can struggle in ways that are not always visible to those closest to them.

Lil Jon’s account does not offer easy answers or erase the pain of loss. Instead, it preserves a final exchange between a father and son—one filled with reassurance, vulnerability and love.

In the end, his story is a sobering reminder that listening, showing compassion and expressing love can matter more than we realize.
