Music industry icon Clive Davis has died at the age of 94.
His family confirmed the news on June 22 after he was recently hospitalized due to an upper respiratory infection.
Davis’ four children honored his memory in a heartfelt statement shared on Instagram, reflecting on his remarkable legacy.
“To the world, our father was the iconic music legend whose vision, instincts, and relentless pursuit of excellence shaped the soundtrack of countless lives,” the statement reads. “He discovered, mentored, and championed the greatest artists in modern music history, leaving an indelible mark on culture that will endure for generations.
“To his family, Clive was Dad and Granddaddy, the steady presence at the center of our lives, the source of wisdom, strength, encouragement, and unconditional love. No matter how extraordinary his professional accomplishments, he never lost sight of what mattered most: the people he loved.”
Jermaine Dupri, singer Tamar Braxton, and producer Jerry Wonda were among the many who left heartfelt comments on the post, each sharing prayer emojis to honor the late music executive.
A longtime representative for Davis confirmed that he “passed away peacefully from an age-related illness,” surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Brooklyn in 1932 and later raised in Queens after losing both parents during his teenage years, Davis pursued higher education at NYU and Harvard before embarking on a legal career at Columbia Records in 1960. His exceptional knack for deal-making propelled him swiftly up the ranks, leading to his appointment as president of Columbia Records in 1967.
Davis founded Arista Records in 1974, where he achieved groundbreaking success, including discovering and nurturing Whitney Houston’s iconic career.
In 1993, he collaborated with Diddy to co-launch Bad Boy Entertainment under Arista’s banner, which introduced legendary acts like the Notorious B.I.G. He also played a pivotal role in backing LaFace Records, paving the way for artists such as OutKast, TLC, Usher, Toni Braxton, and others.
Later in his career, he established J Records, which was instrumental in launching the careers of stars like Alicia Keys and Jennifer Hudson.
Clive’s name became a symbol of success in the music industry, often mentioned in songs by artists such as Gucci Mane, Kendrick Lamar, and others.
