Kid Cudi has revealed how marijuana once had an overwhelming hold on his life before he sought help through rehab.
In an interview with People, the artist shared insights into his past struggles with substance abuse, saying: “I just was in this place where I was abusing it. I was really abusing it. I was smoking maybe 15 blunts a day, wake up in the mornings, get high. It truly ruled my life.”
The rapper, who also dabbles in acting, described his altered relationship with the substance post-rehab. He explained, “And now I just get after it at night or on the weekends when I have the free time and I’m just relaxing, but I’m not smoking nowhere near as much weed as I was smoking before.”
“A joint lasts me all day, damn near. So my relationship has changed with that in a major way. And I’m just more interested in being sober a lot more and being more present.”
Cudi’s journey included a challenging moment during one of his rehab stints when he became the subject of a diss track by Drake. On the 2016 track “Two Birds, One Stone,” Drake took aim at Cudi’s mental health struggles — a move widely criticized by fans for its insensitivity.
Speaking with CBS Mornings, Cudi recounted his reaction to the song: “I was like, oh okay, you wanna kick me when I’m down. Great. But he wanted to play the game with me. He wanted me to put him in my song or whatever and I’m not that type of artist.”
Cudi emphasized that he refrained from retaliating in his lyrics, noting, “I’m not going to the studio angry rapping about some other man and putting him in my art. That’s not what we’re gonna do here. I’m gonna come to your doorstep and I’mma let you know that I’mma see you. I’mma see you and that’s a promise.”
The two artists appeared to settle their differences in 2021 when Cudi collaborated on a track for Drake’s album. However, their rapport didn’t last. Reflecting on their interactions since then, Cudi shared, “I went on to do a record for him for his album, but granted, I haven’t heard from him ever since.”
Despite the distance between them now, Cudi harbors no animosity toward Drake. He said, “It just let me know that time is over. We’ll never be homies like we were before. I don’t have any beef with him anymore and I’m not mad at him or anything. It’s just time has gone by. [We are in] different places. It’s all good. I know he loves me. I know that. And I know he respects me as an artist. That’s good enough for me.”
