Akon’s wife, Tomeka Thiam, has officially filed for divorce just days before their 29th wedding anniversary, citing irreconcilable differences as the primary reason for the separation, according to court documents.
The filing reveals that out of Akon’s nine children, the couple shares one minor child — a 17-year-old daughter named Journey. Thiam is requesting sole physical custody and joint legal custody of their daughter, alongside seeking spousal support while also aiming to block Akon from receiving any financial support from her.
Akon and Tomeka have been married since September 15, 1996. The divorce filing comes nearly three decades into their relationship, marking an end to a long-standing union.
Previously, during an interview with DJ Vlad, Akon confirmed he has nine children — seven sons and two daughters — but chose to maintain an air of mystery about his personal life.
When asked about the rumors surrounding his family dynamics, he remarked lightheartedly that he preferred leaving it up to speculation.
“I have seven boys and two girls,” he told Vlad. “I’mma let it stay a rumor. I like this. I like the fact that people are guessing now, I love it. I’m not confirming nor denying. You go online, you may see nine, you might see seven, you might see four. I love it, though.”
In other news, Akon recently shared ambitious plans for his music catalog. Earlier this year, he disclosed to TMZ that he intends to remix his entire catalog into country songs — a project he’s been developing over five years.
