Swishahouse founder Michael “5000” Watts has passed away at the age of 52. His family confirmed the tragic news on January 30 through an official statement.

The statement expressed their sorrow and heartbreak, noting that Michael “5000” Watts died surrounded by loved ones. They extended gratitude for the support shown throughout his illustrious career and requested ongoing prayers as the family copes with this difficult loss.

“It is with profound sadness and heartbreak that we inform the public of our beloved Michael ‘5000’ Watts. On Jan. 30, 2026, Watts transitioned surrounded by loved ones,” the statement from his family reads.

“We truly appreciate the love shown to Michael throughout his career, and we ask for continued prayers as we navigate through this very hard journey.”

Watts succumbed to a fatal heart rhythm condition called torsades de Pointes, leading to sudden cardiac arrest. He leaves behind his wife, Tammie Watts, five children, and two grandchildren.

Reflecting on his legacy, the family highlighted Watts’ contributions to music and the community, starting his career at just 14 years old. Over the years, he established himself as a business owner, DJ, radio personality, founder of Swishahouse, and a prominent figure in Houston’s hip-hop scene.

“His legacy and career started at the age of 14 and he continued his success as a business owner, DJ, radio personality, founder and owner of Swishahouse and pillar in the community,” the statement continues.

Tributes poured in from numerous notable figures in the music industry, including Juicy J, Slim Thug, DJ Paul, Drumma Boy, and Maxo Kream. Watts’ impact on hip-hop extended far beyond his role as a DJ and producer.

When he founded Swishahouse in 1997, he played a pivotal role in popularizing Houston’s chopped-and-screwed sound and elevating the careers of artists like Paul Wall, Slim Thug, Mike Jones, and Chamillionaire. The label became a cornerstone of Southern hip-hop throughout the 2000s.

Earlier this week, on January 28, Watts’ family and Swishahouse disclosed that he had been hospitalized due to severe health complications and asked fans to keep him in their prayers.
