16 years ago today, the Hip-Hop community bid farewell to Guru, a towering figure whose voice resonated deeply within the culture and as half of the iconic duo Gang Starr. He died from myeloma at age 48.
Renowned for his smooth monotone flow, incisive lyricism, and reflective storytelling, Guru was instrumental in shaping the sound of ’90s boom-bap alongside DJ Premier. Together, they crafted timeless tracks that remain influential pillars of the genre.
Beyond his work with Gang Starr, Guru broke new ground with his innovative Jazzmatazz series, merging Hip-Hop with Jazz and pushing the boundaries of musical creativity.
His impact endures through his art, his message, and the enduring foundation he laid for generations to come.
May he rest in peace and his legacy continue to be remembered.
