Rising Brooklyn artist Jamel Davis, known by his stage name Sinthoro, was tragically killed during a domestic dispute just as his musical career was gaining momentum.
The 43-year-old artist lost his life on April 12 at the Walt Whitman Houses in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, following an argument that escalated with his 16-year-old stepson, Tristan Hightower.
According to authorities and reports, the altercation stemmed from concerns over the teen’s behavior at home.
The incident unfolded after Hightowerās mother, who is three months pregnant, sent him a text message asking him not to smoke marijuana in their apartment due to fears about its potential effects on her unborn child.
This long-standing issue of contention reportedly caused friction within the household and ultimately led to a heated exchange.
As the argument intensified, Davis attempted to intervene. Hightower then allegedly went to his bedroom, retrieved a firearm from a shoebox, and shot Davis once in the chest and once in the arm.
Emergency responders transported Davis to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Sinthoroās music was beginning to gain recognition, particularly with his song “Slide,” which had started to receive airplay on local hip-hop radio stations and was even featured in an Instagram Reel associated with rapper 50 Cent.
Four days after the shooting, police arrested Hightower in the Bronx. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny commented that the teen appeared āvery disheveledā upon his arrest, suggesting he may have been living on the streets since the incident.
Authorities noted that Hightower had two prior domestic incident reports on file involving his mother, both from 2025. In one report, she had informed police of her sonās access to a firearm, presumed to be the same weapon used in the shooting.
Hightower has been charged with murder and criminal possession of a loaded firearm. The court will now deliberate whether he should be prosecuted as an adult or juvenile in this case.
