“It Takes Two” rapper Rob Base has passed away at the age of 59.
The artist, known for being one-half of the iconic duo Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock, died on Friday, May 22, just days after celebrating his 59th birthday. According to an announcement made by his family on his official Instagram account, the Harlem native had been quietly battling cancer prior to his passing.
“Today, we share the heartbreaking news that hip hop legend Rob Base passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, surrounded by family after a private battle with cancer,” the statement began.
The rapper’s family continued, “Rob’s music, energy, and legacy helped shape a generation and brought joy to millions around the world. Beyond the stage, he was a loving father, family man, friend, and creative force whose impact will never be forgotten. Thank you for the music, the memories, and the moments that became the soundtrack to our lives. Rest in Paradise, Rob Base. May 18, 1967 – May 22, 2026.”
Childhood friends Rob Base (Robert Ginyard) and DJ E-Z Rock (Rodney Bryce) gained widespread recognition in the late 1980s. Their major breakthrough came in 1988 with the release of *It Takes Two* under Profile Records. The track became a crossover sensation, reaching No. 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remaining on the chart for 16 weeks. It was later certified platinum by the RIAA, cementing its iconic status.
Tragically, DJ E-Z Rock passed away in 2014 due to complications from diabetes. Despite this loss, Rob Base has continued to honor their musical legacy. In recent years, he joined the *I Love the 90’s Tour* alongside Vanilla Ice and other notable artists from the era.
