R. Kelly has officially appealed to President Trump to reduce his 30-year sentence for sex crimes.
As reported by the Chicago Tribune on July 14, the incarcerated singer has submitted a clemency petition to the Office of the Pardon Attorney. This Department of Justice division reviews formal requests for executive clemency that are directed to the White House.
This plea for clemency comes 13 months after Kelly’s newest lawyer, Beau Brindley, called for the singer’s immediate release. Brindley claims there was a plot involving a member of the Aryan Brotherhood, allegedly recruited by prison officials, to assassinate Kelly.
“These are people that seek to kill Mr. Kelly rather than allow the corrupt criminal conduct of those who manufactured his convictions be exposed,” Brindely told reporters during a press conference after filing an emergency motion that claimed Kelly’s First, Sixth, and Eighth Amendment rights are being violated.
Brindley informally requested that Trump intervene to secure Kelly’s release under home detention.
“R. Kelly does not have the time, with his life in danger, to go through the normal channels,” Brindley said. “I will ask President Trump to help us, because we need him.”
R. Kelly is presently serving a 30-year sentence at FCI Butner in North Carolina following his 2022 convictions for sex trafficking and sex crimes involving minors. His release is scheduled for January 31, 2045, when he will be 78 years old.
