The world of Hip-Hop has lost another legendary rapper.

Black Rob, born Robert Ross, passed away in an Atlanta hospital on Saturday (April 17) at the age of 51. His death was confirmed by former label mate Mark Curry, who posted an emotional video message on Instagram.

With tears pouring down his face, Curry said:

Rob passed away about an hour ago. I don’t know where to begin, but I thank everybody for the donations. We’ve lost a lot [of] legends and we can’t afford to lose anymore.

Black Rob had been suffering through declining health over the past five years, including kidney failure and four strokes. News of Rob’s death comes one week after he talked about his serious health issues from a hospital bed, all while in obvious extreme pain.

I don’t know what the pain is…the pain is crazy, man. It’s helping me out, though. It’s making me realize, I have a lot to go on, man– a lot to go on, man.

Black Rob joined Diddy’s Bad Boy Records in the mid-’90s, and will be forever remembered by his infectious, hook-laden single from his debut album “Life Story.”

The Harlem rapper was best known for his 2000 hit “Whoa!” which peaked at #43 on the Billboard Top 100, but the summer party jam continues to be heard blasting from car stereos in neighborhoods across the five boroughs more than 20 years later. He was also well known for his verse on Diddy’s “Bad Boy 4 Life,” alongside Curry. Though he left Bad Boy Records in the mid-2000s, Rob reunited with the crew for select dates of the Bad Boy Family Reunion Tour in 2016.

Black Rob is survived by four children, Kayli, Rianna, Diamond and Million.
