Rich Homie Quan’s father, Corey Lamar, has opened up about the emotional challenges following his son’s untimely passing, reflecting on key moments that left a mark on the hip-hop community.
Speaking on the “It’s Up There” podcast, Lamar touched on deeply personal topics, including Birdman’s absence from the funeral and the strained relationship between Quan and Young Thug.
Lamar revealed that while Birdman did privately reach out to extend his condolences after Quan’s death, many fans were taken aback by his decision not to attend the funeral.
This raised questions, especially given Quan’s significant role during the Rich Gang era alongside Young Thug. Lamar shared his thoughts on these complex dynamics and addressed the situation further about 26 minutes into the interview.
“Bird[man] is who he is, man,” Lamar said. “At the end of the day, man you accept people for who they are… Bird reached out to me. He did. Listen, the day that my son passed, he called my phone. Like, ‘Hey, fam, I’m here if you need anything.’ He was being positive for me. ‘Look, I can’t tell you how to feel, but you know, keep your head up. I’m here for you if need anything fam. Call me.’”
Lamar showed empathy regarding the situation, expressing that he couldn’t dictate how Birdman should grieve.
The interview took a more poignant turn when the topic shifted to Young Thug. Lamar shared that the fallout between Rich Homie Quan and Thug had a profound emotional impact on his son.
For years, fans have speculated about what truly transpired between the two artists, who had redefined rap together in the mid-2010s with hits like “Lifestyle.”
At one time, Rich Gang seemed poised to lead the future of Atlanta rap. The synergy between Quan and Thug was undeniable, leaving many convinced they were destined to become one of hip-hop’s legendary duos.
However, disagreements, industry dynamics, and personal conflicts reportedly drove them apart. Lamar revealed that Quan struggled to heal from the emotional aftermath of their split, as the friendship had held great significance to him.
“It affected Quan a lot,” Lamar said. “But I know my son, bro. It had a profound effect on his everyday life, man. I know it did.”
