Sometimes, the most unexpected songs turn out to be the ones that make the biggest impact. That was precisely the case for Quavo when the Migos recorded “Versace” back in 2013.
Recently, during an episode of GOAT Talk at ComplexCon, where he sat down with WWE legend Rey Mysterio, Quavo opened up about his initial doubts regarding the release of “Versace.” The track introduced the now-iconic triplet flow of the Atlanta trio and ultimately became their breakout hit.
Quavo shared his thoughts, admitting he didn’t initially see the song’s potential.
“I would think like ‘Versace’ would be a crazy thing to drop,” he said. “Cause we were just in the studio saying ‘Versace, Versace’ like anybody else would be like, ‘Man, cut that shit off. What the f–k y’all doing?’”
However, Quavo acknowledged how wrong he was in hindsight: “But that was the record that changed our life, and Drake got on that song. So sometimes your worst can be your best. You just gotta shoot your shot and keep trying.”
Produced by Zaytoven, the track quickly caught Drake’s attention, leading him to lend his co-sign and feature on it. This collaboration propelled “Versace” into mainstream success, marking Migos’ first-ever entry on the Billboard Hot 100, where it debuted at #99.
