Pras, the former member of the Fugees, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for federal conspiracy charges, including illegal foreign lobbying.
The sentencing took place on Thursday, November 20, in a Washington D.C. federal court, presided over by Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, as reported by Billboard. Pras chose not to make any statements to the court following his sentence.
In addition to his prison term, he faces three years of probation once released and was previously ordered to forfeit $64 million allegedly tied to his illicit activities.
Earlier in April 2023, Pras was convicted for participating in a large-scale scheme to funnel millions of dollars in foreign funds for illegal lobbying efforts and unlawful campaign contributions. According to the Department of Justice, the funds were directed towards former President Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign.
Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen of the Justice Department’s National Security Division commented on the case, stating that Pras used his celebrity status to influence U.S. officials on behalf of foreign interests without disclosure. Olsen emphasized that such actions undermine the rule of law, vowing to hold accountable those who covertly aid foreign actors in disrupting the nation’s democratic framework.
Following the sentencing, Pras’ spokesperson, Erica Dumas, issued a statement, asserting this moment is not the conclusion of Pras’ story or legacy. She expressed gratitude for the support shown towards Pras while commenting on the severity of his punishment in comparison to other crimes.
Pras is set to begin serving his sentence on January 27, 2026.
