American rapper Wiz Khalifa has been sentenced to 9 months in jail by a Romanian court for drug possession, following an incident that occurred during his participation in a music festival in the country over a year ago.

The case stems from a July 2024 event at the Beach, Please! Festival in Costinesti, a seaside resort in Constanta County. Romanian police reportedly stopped Khalifa after he was seen smoking cannabis on stage.

Authorities discovered more than 18 grams of cannabis in his possession, with evidence suggesting some of it had been consumed publicly during his performance.

The Constanta Court of Appeal delivered the final verdict, convicting him of “possession of dangerous drugs, without right, for personal consumption,” as reported by the national news agency Agerpres.

This ruling superseded an earlier judgment by a lower court in April, which had fined Khalifa 3,600 lei (approximately $830) for illegal drug possession. Prosecutors successfully appealed this initial decision, leading to the harsher nine-month prison term.

Romania is known for enforcing stringent drug laws. Even the possession of small quantities of cannabis for personal use is criminalized and can result in penalties ranging from a fine to imprisonment of up to two years.

As a U.S. citizen who does not reside in Romania, it remains uncertain whether authorities will pursue an extradition request against Khalifa.
