The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled Lil Poppa’s death as a suicide resulting from a gunshot wound to the head.
The autopsy was conducted on February 19, while the Jacksonville rapper, born Janarious Mykel Wheeler, passed away on February 18 at the age of 25.
His loss sparked an outpouring of grief and support across the hip-hop community, with heartfelt tributes pouring in from artists such as Boosie Badazz, Mozzy, Dej Loaf, and Nardo Wick.
Just days before his passing, on February 13, Lil Poppa released his single “Out of Town Bae.” Earlier this year, Lil Poppa had been actively touring and was scheduled to perform at a Birthday Bash show in New Orleans this March.
Having signed to Yo Gotti’s CMG Records in 2022, Lil Poppa delivered several projects under the label, including his critically acclaimed album “Almost Normal Again” last August.
CMG expressed their devastation in a public statement. They described him as an artist with profound ambition, immense talent, and boundless potential.
“We are stunned and devastated by the loss of our beloved family member, Janarious ‘Lil Poppa’ Wheeler. Poppa was more than just a talented artist — he was an ambitious young man with depth beyond his years and endless potential. Our love for him knew no bounds.”
The label further emphasized the heartbreak of his loss, urging people to keep his loved ones in their thoughts.
“He was one of those rare artists who thoughtfully poured his pain, growth and truth into his art. His passion and authenticity connected and inspired fans from all walks of life. This is truly a heartbreaking loss for everyone who knew and loved him. Please keep his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers. Poppa, we promise to uphold your legacy with honor and respect.
