Lil Nas X has candidly spoken about his experience with bipolar disorder while giving fans a glimpse into his upcoming music in a heartfelt video.
On June 17, the “Old Town Road” artist took to Instagram to share an update on his mental health. Discussing his 2025 bipolar disorder diagnosis, Lil Nas X opened up about his progress, offering an optimistic perspective on his rehab journey.
The video, available below, shows the rapper in a positive and transparent light as he connects with his followers.
“I’ve been in rehab for a few months, and since then I’ve been back at home, whether it’s in Atlanta with my family or in Los Angeles with myself and friends and whatnot,” he said. “Trying to ground myself down to Earth and get out of my head. I have a therapist now and a psychiatrist, which has been really helpful.”
The Grammy Award-winning artist admitted that he suspected he might be bipolar but chose to disregard it, as he was unwilling to take medication.
“I feel like I had known for like the past few years, but I didn’t want to admit to it because I didn’t want to have to take medication,” he stated. “I mean, I’m already Black and gay, like, damn, God. Gay, bipolar, like I’m living life on extreme hard mode,” he jokingly added.
Nevertheless, Lil Nas X reassured fans that he is doing well.
“I’m doing much better, I’m feeling better, I’m creating freely, and there’s less fear in my heart. I’m just smelling the roses,” he said.
The 27-year-old artist revealed that he is working on new music, though he has yet to fully dive into the recording process.
“I’m not getting completely to that just yet,” he said. “But I’m excited to do that and I’m excited to go on that journey with you guys.”
In April 2026, a judge in Los Angeles directed Lil Nas X to participate in a mental health diversion program to manage his bipolar disorder. This ruling came after his arrest in August 2025.
If he complies with the designated medical program and avoids any legal issues for two years, the court will dismiss the felony assault charges associated with the case. Furthermore, he is prohibited from possessing weapons or making any threats of violence throughout the duration of the program.
