A judge has declared a mistrial in the Chris Brown dog attack case, with the singer responding to the outcome by saying, “It happens.”
On June 16, Chris Brown appeared in court for a civil lawsuit brought against him by his former housekeeper, Maria Avila. Avila alleges she was severely attacked by Brown’s dog back in 2020.
However, the trial was cut short when Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Huey P. Cotton ruled a mistrial. The decision came after it was revealed that one juror had searched for case-related information online and shared it with other members of the jury.
“Unfortunately, one of the jurors has violated my admonitions against searching the internet for information, and not only that, but he also shared it, and as a consequence, I have to declare a mistrial,” Judge Cotton told the court.
Brown was instructed to return to court on June 18 as the trial was set to restart with a new jury. When approached by TMZ outside the courthouse, the singer briefly commented on the premature end of the initial trial, saying, “It happens.” When questioned about Maria Avila’s $90 million lawsuit against him, he remarked: “That’s crazy.”
Avila initially brought the lawsuit against Chris Brown in April 2021, alleging she sustained permanent physical injuries after being attacked by his Caucasian Shepherd while taking out the trash at his California residence.
Following the incident, law enforcement euthanized the dog 12 days later.
