Doja Cat candidly discussed her experiences with cocaine use and her battles with self-hatred and image issues during her upbringing. In a stream-of-consciousness chat on TikTok, held on August 31, the Grammy-winning artist shared her thoughts with her usual straightforward honesty.
“I have struggled with cocaine; I think it could’ve been, like, eight years ago, but I’m well past that,” she admitted, which would be around the time of her Amala era.
Doja Cat Closes Down Addiction Rumor
Doja shared that she had difficulties with alcohol, but doesn’t label herself as an “alcoholic,” despite recognizing it as a problem. She came to understand that combining alcohol with her negative thoughts and expressing them online wasn’t healthy.
“Using the internet as a means of validation to the negative thoughts in my head, which were then brought on by drinking alcohol,” she said. “I never had a problem with drugs, except for weed, but alcohol is something I’ve definitely had a problem with. I was never an alcoholic, but I definitely had problems.”
Doja Cat continued, “It’s not good to pair these two things together. Stay creative, take care of yourself; you’re not indestructible.”
Doja responded to accusations of self-hatred, admitting that there was truth to them.
“It was very obvious that I did. I would even verbalize it out loud when I was 16,” she revealed. “I think I hated myself since I was 8 years old. That was since I moved to my predominantly white neighborhood.”
The rapper known for “Say So” mentioned that she wanted to openly confront her challenges because she feels there aren’t many examples of people doing that currently.
“I, personally, want to dead those allegations. I’d really like to because it’s a negative thing. The only way I can do that is go through it, so I’ve gone through,” she said. “I think also being public about this sort of thing is very important because a lot of people don’t talk about this s–t.”
