Wiz Khalifa knows how to make an entrance. When the young native of Pittsburgh, PA walks into the room the aroma or marijuana meets you before he does. But don’t get it confused, he’s more than your run of the mill high off life rapper.

The rolling stoner took the industry by storm last year with his “Wake and Bake“ tour, selling out clubs and arenas across the country. Along the way, he’s had a smash single, signed a major record deal with Atlantic Records, and became one of the brightest young stars in the game.

With is debut full length album “Rolling Papers“ hitting stores on March 29, Wiz stopped in Charlotte, North Carolina on a promo run. While in the Queen City, he exclusively spoke with Yo! Raps about his life on the road, his new album and working with superstars.

First off, thanks for taking a quick time out to chat with Yo! Raps. Why are you out on the road right now?

I’m doing a promo run. The new album “Rolling Papers“ drops on March 29 so we’re just going around and letting people know that the album is dropping soon. The first single “Roll Up“ is out right now and we’re just out here reaching out to the people

For the starters, how did you get into Hip-Hop?

It was my love for music and just being inspired by music that made me want to create my own little thing. I started out trying to develop my own sound as an emcee and I just took it from there

Last year, you had a great run with your mixtapes and tour. After having such success as an indie were you hesitant in anyway to step to a major label like Atlantic Records?

I wasn’t hesitant to step to a major. It just had to be the right situation. I had to know that I was around the right set of people who were going to understand my project and what I had going on. I feel like I did that and now I’m where I wanted to be.

Your “Wake and Bake“ tour really set you out there as a star in your own right. What’s it like touring and putting out music on your own?

It was awesome being able to work for myself and build a fanbase who gets to know me for me and who I am. I was able to stand up there next to A-List superstars being this little guy from Pittsburgh. That was a great feeling!

Speaking of standing next to A-List artists, what was it like being able to work with artists like Snoop Dogg and Three 6 Mafia’s Juicy J?

It’s awesome! Those are people I really looked up to and listened to their music all the time. So to be able to connect with them and chill with them and have the ability to create music with them is an awesome feeling. It’s what I always wanted to do.

Let us talk about your major label debut album “Rolling Papers“. Who are some of the producers you worked with on the album?

I worked with a lot of my producers; Jim Jonsin, Stargate, ID Productions. I got a couple of up-n-comers on the disc as well. I think the project is a good representation of what I’ve been doing and what I’ve been through lately

From Twitter to the blogs, you’re a big personality. Can you speak on the influence the Internet has been on your career?

Big time! It really gave me a platform to connect with my fans and really get my personality out and let them know who I am as an individual and artist. The Internet lets people be involved in a way that they usually wouldn’t be able to do and that’s big.

Are you going back out touring anytime soon?

Definitely! I have a college tour coming up next month called “The Green Carpet“ tour. It’s all about environmental awareness.

Where are you off to next?

I got a show coming up at West Virginia University with Snoop Dogg and then I’m back on promo.

If you could give advice to any young artists coming up behind you, what would it be?

I would tell them to always stay working hard and always put your material out and always be working on your next project. A lot of artists focus on just one thing and you can get caught up like that. You should always be working on your next project.
