Eminem‘s music publishing company Eight Mile Style has filed a lawsuit against Meta.
The lawsuit was filed in a federal court in Michigan and accuses the Menlo Park-based tech company of storing, reproducing and distributing Eminem’s music without obtaining the license to do so.
The company is suing Meta for “copyright infringement, inducement of copyright infringement, contributory copyright infringement and vicarious copyright infringement,” as well as earning money from the use of the songs.
“On information and belief, despite their not being licensed, the recordings of the Eight Mile Compositions have been reproduced and synchronized with visual content on Meta’s platforms across millions of videos, which have been viewed billions of times,” the complaint said.
Eight Mile Style, which is based in Ferndale, Mich., is seeking at least $109 million from Meta and a court order to stop several alleged forms of copyright infringement.
Meta’s online music libraries supposedly has a total of 243 Eight Mile Style songs for users to put on their posts.
Meta claims it has licenses with thousands of partners and was negotiating in good faith with Eight Mile Style, but the company chose to sue instead of continuing discussions.
Eminem himself is not directly involved in the lawsuit.
