DJ Quik‘s son, David Marvin Blake Jr., has been sentenced to a significant prison term for his involvement in the 2022 fatal shooting of Julio Moises Cardoza Jr. in Downey, California.
A Los Angeles County judge imposed a sentence of 15 years to life in prison following Blake Jr.’s conviction for second-degree murder and shooting from a vehicle. The court agreed to dismiss firearm enhancements that would have potentially extended his sentence by an additional 25 years to life.
During the sentencing, the judge highlighted the tragic nature of the case, remarking on Blake Jr.’s previously clean criminal record. She emphasized that while the consequences of his actions were severe, a single incident does not define an individual’s entire existence.
The possibility for parole was noted, offering a glimmer of hope for eventual rehabilitation.
Blake Jr. expressed regret before the court, apologizing to the victim’s family and reflecting on his fear during the altercation, which he claimed made him feel his life was at risk. Rejecting the label of murderer, he described the events as unfolding rapidly and insisted his actions were rooted in self-defense.
The prosecution pushed for full accountability, underscoring Blake Jr.’s possession and use of a firearm during the confrontation. On the other hand, the defense argued that the incident was the result of an intense and sudden escalation, urging the judge to limit the sentence to its base terms without additional penalties.
The shooting transpired on May 25, 2022, when Blake Jr., accompanied by his employer and former Compton City Councilman Isaac Galvan, arrived at the victim’s family home. During the encounter, Blake Jr. fired from a vehicle after reportedly seeing a shotgun earlier, though the court found that the victim was unarmed at the time of the shooting.
After initially being arrested following the incident, Blake Jr. was released but later taken back into custody upon his conviction last December.
